JJ Hurt and in Hospital

Original sender: Wendy----
A couple of weeks ago JJ was injured in a dog fight, his hindquarters were torn up. To cut a long story short it seems the local vet was inept, didn't take cultures when pus started to develop, then found his kidneys had shut down. Sent him home with fluids because there was nothing more that they could do for him.

Eric consulted Wendy Wallace who referred him to the University of Florida at Gainesville, below is the latest report.

Original sender: Eric ----
JJ seems to be doing better today. They have greatly increased his fluids and say he is perkier and moving around his crate more than yesterday. They have inserted a urinary catheter to monitor urine production; he seems to be peeing a lot (very good news). His blood pressure was a bit high but they are monitoring it and not overly concerned at present. They did an X-ray and Ultrasound today and his kidneys seem to be enlarged in a way that would suggest an acute rather than chronic renal failure (recovery from acute tends to have a better long term prognosis). Later today they will surgically reopen the wounds from the fight and try to root out all the infection they can find. Tomorrow they will do another blood panel and see if his kidneys are improving (any sooner and they wouldn‚t expect to learn much in comparison to yesterday).

Today is much more hopeful. If (a big if) he can survive the infection and get the blood values for Kidney function improved (not necessarily normal yet but better, another huge if) He has a pretty good chance for a recovery. If you ask them for a simple prognosis they say „guarded‰ (I hope that doesn‚t mean terminal).

I am hoping to go to Gainesville (130 miles) to visit him first thing tomorrow am.
