I just got off the phone with Hope, the vet student assigned to JJ’s case. Today was expected to be a slow news day and didn’t disappoint.
JJ was still not interested in eating so they began to use the feeding tube that was implanted yesterday. They have him on some post op pain meds so he’s a bit groggy and looks a bit stoned.
The massage program has begun. They work from the toes up to the hip trying to push the fluids towards the vacuum drain. They wrap a pressure bandage as they go so the excess fluids can’t go back down between strokes. JJ does not seem to enjoy having his knee flexed due to the edema. When the massage is over they remove the pressure bandage so circulation is not affected.
They have tapered his IV fluids down to 100ml/hr (maintenance is about 65, he was at about 160 yesterday) and his urine is still quite dilute. His maintenance # will be somewhat higher due to the fluids he’s losing in his wound. His urine production is not quite as high as his fluid intake, apparently a good sign that he’s not becoming dehydrated.
He’s not walking as well today as yesterday and there is no obvious cause. His pain meds were originally “PRN” (as needed) and the stoic little shit never showed any pain and managed to miss a couple of doses. He’s now on a less subjective dosing schedule and hopefully will walk a bit better.
His stools still have a tarry quality that may be due to ulcers in the GI tract as a result of the NSAIDS he was on. He’s being treated with the same meds they would use with a confirmed diagnosis so there is little urgency to track it down at present.
The next bloodwork will be tomorrow to see if his Kidney values have continued to improve. JJ’s next surgery will be sometime after 11am on Thursday. I am hoping to visit him Thursday first thing. It’s a bit of a stretch to get all my hours in for the week since I am judging again this weekend and have an early-ish flight Friday.
